Visual Impact Assessments

The development of infrastructure and structures change a landscape and impact on the way that an area is perceived. This can spoil enjoyment of a view which in turn can compromise existing and potential uses of a landscape.

Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) provides a means of assessing whether landscape change is critical. It also provides the means for the public and impact assessors to understand the nature, the extent and the intensity of possible landscape change.

LVIA usually includes

E

Definition of the extent of visibility; and

E

An assessment of existing landscape character; and

E

An assessment of the possible change in landscape character; and

E

An assessment of the implications of possible landscape change; and

E

Illustrations of likely impact in the form of montages or wire frame images either superimposed or presented alongside existing views.

Arc Spatial Analyst and 3D CAD modelling are tools that are used to help define the extent and nature of possible impacts.

LVIA work is undertaken in accordance with key guidelines that include

E

The Government of the Western Cape’s Guidelines for involving Visual and Aesthetic Specialists in EIA Processes, and

E

The UK’s Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment / Landscape Institute’s Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment.
